PCHS Wetland
Preble County Historical Society’s wetland restoration project – helping to preserve our earth. Why a wetland? A wetland restoration is designed to provide water for wildlife and restore wetland ecosystems. Wetlands also reduce soil erosion and improve water quality. A wetland attracts waterfowl, amphibians, invertebrates, reptiles, and many other wildlife species. The establishment of the 15-acre wetland is in collaboration with the Natural Resource Conservation Service and Preble Soil and Water Conservation District. The wetland will add to the preservation of the land and provide substantial new educational opportunities for the Society. Wetlands help prevent floods by soaking up extra rainfall and filtering silt from the surface run-off to allow the water to slowly seep into the water table. Wetland plants such as prairie grass, trees, and shrubs remove carbon dioxide from the air and chemicals and other impurities from the water. An increase of wildlife and decrease of land erosion as reduced erosion and accumulation of nutrients is a key element in a wetland habitat. The pond area consists of about 3.6 acres with a wildlife habitat area of native grasses and forbs throughout the remaining 11.4 acres acres. The Historical Society’s wetland restoration project will include interpretive signage explaining the benefits of wetland, what animals make a wetland their home, why preserve wetlands, and what plants are found in a wetland. In addition, a handicap accessible boardwalk and observation deck will soon be built. Volunteers will be needed to assist with plantings and constructing the boardwalk and observation deck. If outdoor activities are of interest, contact the Society and jump right in and help with this rewarding community project of restoring a wetland!
